Screengrabs from “Katherine Dunham’s Global Travel, 1947-60 (Interactive Space-Time Mapping)”
These four screengrabs show different angles of an interactive space-time globe that Antonio Jimenez Mavillard created to visualize the Everyday Itinerary dataset, which was manually curated by Harmony Bench and Kate Elswit. Spatializing this data while maintaining chronology allows us to see the architecture of Dunham’s global travels, including the locations to which Dunham continuously returned. Time is represented as elevation, with 1947 closest to the earth rising to 1960 farthest away.
